Pudding Races 2009

As the mist rose on Saturday morning from the River Dee, 104 competitors prepared to take oars to battle in the annual pudding races. The pudding races are an internal racing of mixed crews from the rowing club, through knock rounds which determine which scratch crew on the day take home the coveted Christmas puddings. the competition was stiff as seven eights competed, some rounds decided by less than a canvas. However after two hours of racing the final was to be decided between two crews, named, Elf and Scrooge. Scrooge dominated the final, bursting out of the blocks and refusing to give the Elves an inch as they powered down the race course to take the puddings by a length and a quarter. The Lord mayor was on hand to present the puddings to a crew which had a family partnership, both Sam and Alex Lewis ably assisted by James Kinsey, David Cartmell, Kartik Upadhyay, Chris Park, Victoria Seddon, Charlie Corciulo, Alex Gorman and coxed by Grace Young. The plate competition was won by the Snowman crew.

The Under 14’s were also battling out the puddings on the indoor rowing machines. Again after two hours of racing team Comet were victorious with team members Michael Hamilton, Matt Leon, Hayley Milner and Harry Jamieson. A jovial and enjoyable morning was rounded off by a boat naming ceremony as the new double scull was officially launched by Mrs Whitlam. Over 200 people enjoyed the morning activities, many of whom it is hoped will be back to compete in the 2010 pudding races.
